American Citizenship
U.S citizenship may be obtained by birth in the United States, birth in
certain incorporated areas of the U.S., or by being born to parent(s) who are
U.S. citizens. Further, an individual may gain citizenship through a process
known as naturalization. In order to qualify for naturalization, one must be a
Legal Permanent Resident and have resided in the U.S. continuously for five (5)
years after obtaining such status (three (3) years if the Green Card is obtained
through marriage to a U.S. citizen); must be physically present in the US for at
least half of the five (5) years (or half of three (3) years if obtained Green
Card through marriage to a US Citizen); must not be absent for more than one (1)
year during the periods of which continuous residence is required; must be 18
years old; must live in the state from where he is applying for at least three
months; must reside in the U.S continuously from the time the naturalization
application is filed until the time that citizenship is granted; and be able to
show good moral character for the period he or she is residing as a Legal
Permanent Resident.
